Ankle Pain

The ankle is a very complex joint with many ligamentous structures around it and due to the anatomy of the joint it is liable to injury in numerous ways. It does not have many muscles to provide specific support so relies on the ligaments heavily to create the stability.

The ankle is more often damaged when the foot is inverted, stressing the outer ligaments. It can be injured with eversion forces too, but usually the inner ligaments provide more resistance to injury. The inferior tibio-fibular joint, just above the ankle, can lead to long term problems if not treated effectively and comprehensively.

If the ankle becomes swollen and painful, it will be difficult to stand and walk. Early intervention limits the damage and increases the chance of earlier recovery.

We suggest that using the P R I C E concept (Protect, Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate ) is the best early intervention.
