Acute Torticollis (“Wry Neck”)

This can be after trauma, including road traffic accident, or be totally unprovoked, sometimes the result of a growth spurt in young adolescents.

Symptoms usually present first thing in the morning, with muscle spasms and pain, leading to marked limitation of neck movements, predominantly head twisted to one side and the chin to the opposite shoulder.

Early intervention provides the best outcomes. Initially treatment often involves ice, with manual therapy and gentle stretching to resolve the condition, often within a few days.

Our assessment and diagnosis should identify the main reasons for the condition and provide a sound basis for effective treatment.
